Ronald Koeman’s revolution may take a bit of time to get going and there could be some value in backing Stoke City to gain an initial point of the 2017-18 season at Goodison Park.

The Toffees were fast out of the blocks in the summer transfer market, spending big and spending often as they set about further revamping their squad following the work done in that respect by Koeman during his first campaign at the helm.

The sale of star striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United provided plenty of funds, but that was only part of the warchest because Everton now have major financial power courtesy of their majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri as well as the windfall every club has had from the bumper Premier League TV deal.

It allowed, as early as mid-July, Koeman to have signed Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez, Cuco Martina and, perhaps most significantly, Wayne Rooney, who scored a terrific long-range goal on his second debut for the club against Kenyan side Gor Mahia in Tanzania following his return from Manchester United.

The spending was unlikely to finish there with reports that Everton were on the brink of signing Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, while another centre forward is on the agenda and Koeman also wants a defender to cover the lengthy injury absence of Ramiro Funes Mori.

Although pre-season and the Europa League qualifier against Ruzomberok was a good opportunity to assess things, it may take a while for Koeman to finalise his strongest line-up and it would not be unusual if the new signings took time to gel.

Stoke are unlikely to have that problem. Their squad has been relatively settled for the last few years, although manager Mark Hughes will know he needs to freshen things up after they took a step backwards last season when finishing only 13th in the table.

Nevertheless, the Potters have won on two of their last three visits to Goodison Park and with neither club being opening-day specialists, a stalemate could be on the cards.

Everton vs Stoke City stats

  • Everton have drawn their opening match in each of the last four seasons
  • Stoke have not won their first game in any of the last seven campaigns
  • Six of the last nine meetings of these clubs have contained a clean sheet
