After a year’s absence, the Emirates Cup returns to the pre-season schedule in 2017 with hosts Arsenal trying to win the tournament for a fifth time.

First held at the Emirates Stadium in 2007, this quadrangular competition has taken place every year since then apart from 2012 when it would have clashed with the Olympic Games in London and also 2016 due to pitch renovation work at the stadium.

Winners in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2015, Arsenal are the only team with more than one Emirates Cup triumph to their credit, the others to lift the trophy being Hamburg, New York Red Bulls, Galatasaray and Valencia.

The other competing teams in 2017 are Benfica, RB Leipzig and Sevilla. Of that trio, the only one to have taken part before are Benfica who finished fourth and last in 2014 when they lost both of their matches against Arsenal and Valencia.

The action takes place on the weekend of July 29-30 after Arsenal have returned from their summer tour of Australia and China, where their opponents include Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Each team plays two games, one on Saturday and another on Sunday. Three points will be awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat, plus an extra point for each goal scored. Goal difference and then the number of shots on target are the criteria to determine the overall winners if there is a tie for first place.

Saturday’s first match, kicking off at 14:00 BST, is between the two debutants, RB Leipzig and Sevilla. RB Leipzig finished an excellent second in their first ever Bundesliga campaign last season to qualify directly for the Champions League group stage, while Sevilla will contest the play-off round for that competition.

Immediately afterwards, Arsenal will take on Benfica in a repeat of their 2014 meeting which the Gunners won 5-1 with four goals scored by Yaya Sanogo.

Sunday’s matches begin with RB Leipzig taking on Benfica, followed by Arsenal’s game against Sevilla. These clubs previously met in the group stage of the 2007-08 Champions League with Arsene Wenger’s side winning 3-0 at home before losing the reverse fixture 3-1.
