Crystal Palace vs Southampton predictions for their Premier League match at Selhurst Park on Saturday lunchtime. Roy Hodgson is expected to be in charge of Palace for the first time. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Roy Hodgson is set to be the man tasked with guiding Crystal Palace to their first goal, point and, they hope, victory of the Premier League season in this fortuitously-chosen live televised match.

Those who select the TV games must have been privately high-fiving after Frank de Boer was sacked by Crystal Palace on Monday, for a new manager’s first match is always good value to boost viewing figures. In normal circumstances, it could have been a fairly mundane affair.

But there is certainly nothing normal about what has happened at Selhurst Park over the last few months with Sam Allardyce walking out after keeping Palace up, De Boer appointed as his replacement and then being asked to clear his desk after 77 days – only eight fewer than he lasted at Inter Milan last season!

At the time of writing on Tuesday evening, we were awaiting the inevitable confirmation that former England boss Hodgson would be next into the hotseat, 14 months or so after he vacated the national-team job following that embarrassing Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland.

Reports indicated that the 70-year-old would take his first Eagles training session on Wednesday, giving him three days to prepare for this Saturday lunchtime kick-off and rid the players of the tactics they were struggling to come to terms with under De Boer.

But will it be enough time to make an immediate impact? Palace certainly have players good enough to win their share of Premier League games, they showed that last season, but Hodgson has to work out an effective line-up and formation first.

In fairness, it’s not as though Southampton are impossible to beat and we have already flagged them up as a team we think will struggle this season, a theory which was given even more credence by their 2-0 defeat at home to Watford last week.

It was arguable whether Mauricio Pellegrino was a better appointment than De Boer in the first place and the Argentine will soon be under pressure himself if results do not improve.

With these teams having had no end of problems scoring goals since the backend of last season (see stats below) it could be a very tight contest. However, there is simply no evidence to recommend Palace as a bet, so Saints are given the vote to compound the home side’s dreadful start to the campaign.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton stats

  • These clubs have failed to score a goal in 16 of their last 19 combined Premier League matches
  • Southampton have conceded a total of one goal in their three most recent away games
  • Over 2.5 goals have been scored in six of the last nine meetings of these clubs
