Huddersfield have waited 45 years to get back among the elite of English football and can mark their return to the top tier by claiming a point away to Crystal Palace.

It’s not exactly a glamour fixture for the Terriers, indeed their supporters must wait until the very end of September to see their team face one of the big guns when Tottenham visit West Yorkshire.

But excitement will still be rife among everyone connected to Huddersfield, whose promotion via the play-offs last season was a real surprise and owed plenty to the excellent management of Jurgen Klopp’s mate and former Borussia Dortmund colleague David Wagner.

They may have reached the promised land earlier than anticipated but Town are clearly out to make the most of the experience, having hit the ground running by making eight permanent signings – costing a total of £41million in transfer fees – and two loans by as early as July 7.

That meant Wagner was able to formulate his strongest line-up over a busy schedule of eight friendly matches and the most encouraging aspect for the American-German was that his two costliest purchases, Tom Ince and Steve Mounie, were banging in the goals throughout the course of those.

This is a new era also for Palace with Frank de Boer having taken over as manager from Sam Allardyce, who kept the Eagles up last season and then quickly decided he no longer needed the day-to-day pressure in his life of being in charge of a Premier League club at the age of 62.

De Boer led Palace to third position in the Barclays Premier League Asia Trophy, but they appear to be somewhat behind Huddersfield in terms of their preparations and that could enable the visitors to claim an important point, with each contribution to their tally likely to be vital.
