Chelsea surely cannot perform as disappointingly again as they did in the first match of this tie and are expected to move into the fourth round without alarm.

Like most of his counterparts, Antonio Conte made a host of changes to his team for the trip to Carrow Road and those that came in largely failed to capitalise on their opportunity.

From the way they played, you got the impression the likes of Michy Batshuayi and Kenedy see their future away from Chelsea and even some of the more established players did little to suggest they should be automatic choices as the match petered out into a 0-0 draw.

Admittedly Conte has plenty of fish to fry, with the Blues still very active in four competitions, and the manager may see the FA Cup as being the most expendable given that they are just 90 minutes from the Carabao Cup Final while the Champions League resumes next month.

But even if the Italian rings the changes again and trusts the fringe players or even some youngsters, they should be good enough to get the better of Norwich at the second attempt.

Even well below par, Chelsea still looked considerably more dangerous than the Canaries who, at the time of writing, looked set to lose one of their star players, Alex Pritchard, to a move up to the Premier League with Huddersfield Town.

Daniel Farke’s side have been faring better of late - at least before Saturday’s trip to Bristol City which took place after this was being written - than during a poor spell in the late autumn but it would take something well out of the ordinary to get the better of Chelsea here.

Although the reigning Premier League champions’ strikers have not been doing the business recently, they should still be able to create enough to get the job done in 90 minutes and with another clean sheet to boot.

Chelsea vs Norwich City stats

  • Norwich have never beaten Chelsea in the FA Cup in seven previous attempts, losing four matches and drawing the other three
  • The Canaries have not scored in the last five of those games, their most recent FA Cup goal against Chelsea coming in 1936
  • Going into Saturday’s match against Leicester, Chelsea had kept six clean sheets in their previous eight games
