Chelsea fans will have happy recent memories of facing Burnley on the opening weekend of the season, but their team may not have things all their own way this time.

Three years ago, the Blues travelled to Turf Moor to get their campaign up and running and produced a sparkling performance to win 3-1, the highlight a beautiful chipped pass by Cesc Fabregas that provided an assist for the second goal scored by Andre Schurrle.

Of course, Chelsea went on to win the Premier League title that season under Jose Mourinho, and last term they made it two championships in three years as Antonio Conte made a brilliant start to his career in English football.

But it has not been the smoothest of summers for the wealthy west London club. They have lost star man Eden Hazard until September with an injury sustained on international duty, Conte essentially told Diego Costa where to go via text message and they missed out on their perceived No 1 choice of striker signing, Romelu Lukaku, to Manchester United.

To save face, Chelsea then insisted the man they eventually did bring in to replace Costa, his Spain international team-mate Alvaro Morata, had been their first option all along, but that does not quite wash considering he was not signed until well after Lukaku’s transfer had been done.

Morata may ultimately turn out to be every bit as good as Costa, but his less physical style may not be as well suited to English football. And with Hazard on the sidelines, playing Chelsea early in the season is probably the best time, before they get fully up to speed - as Arsenal showed in the FA Community Shield last weekend.

Burnley have caused problems for these opponents before, drawing with them both at home and away, and while Chelsea are still expected to launch their title defence successfully, it could be closer than the bookmakers’ odds suggest.

Chelsea vs Burnley stats

  • Three of the seven league and cup meetings between these clubs since 2008 have finished 1-1
  • Chelsea have not lost on the opening weekend of a season since 1998-99 (2-1 at Coventry)
  • Burnley have not won away from home in their first league match of a season since 2001-02 (2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday)
