Cardiff v Sunderland betting preview

Cardiff City have dropped out of the automatic promotion places having spent so long in the top two so far this season. In the early weeks of the campaign, the Bluebirds were even looking like potential title contenders but as Wolves have gone from strength to strength and built up a seemingly unassailable lead at the top, the Welsh side have dropped off somewhat whilst the improved form of teams like Derby County and Aston Villa has derailed their top two push somewhat.

Despite losing their last four consecutive league matches, including one at relegation-threatened Bolton Wanderers, Neil Warnock's men sit outside of the top two on goal difference alone at the moment and although there is still plenty of time to turn the club's season around, the experienced boss will be hoping that his side can bounce back to league form at the earliest possible opportunity with three points here at 4/5 with Unibet.

Sunderland are struggling to cope with the demands of the Championship and are hoping for a more successful 2018 after struggling in the early months of life back in the second tier. Simon Grayson was brought in to replace David Moyes following the club's relegation from the Premier League last year but with back-to-back relegations a very real possibility, he was sacked after just a few months in the job and replaced by Wales boss Chris Coleman.

So far Coleman has managed to inspire the Black Cats to a couple of improved performances to secure unlikely wins over Nottingham Forest and Fulham in recent weeks. That being said, the likes of Bolton and Birmingham have also started picking up points, so it's no surprise that the Wearsiders now find themselves bottom of the table. Every match carries huge importance for them now - can they take three points here at 4/1 with Ladbrokes?

We're not backing many goals in this game. Sunderland's issues in front of goal have been well-documented this season with a real lack of firepower holding them back after the prolific Lewis Grabban. The Bluebirds haven't been in the best attacking form either of late though, failing to score in two of their last four Championship matches. With a lot on the line for both sides, a tight game could ensure with few chances at either end and under 2.5 goals at 7/10 with BetVictor.

That said, if either side can get on the scoresheet here it should be the hosts. With the home advantage, higher league position and superior squad, it makes sense to back them here even if they've been off form of late. The Black Cats are really struggling still, so this home fixture against the division's bottom club is the perfect opportunity for a strong defensive display to secure a home win to nil for the Bluebirds at odds of 7/4 with Betfred.

Recommended bets:
Under 2.5 goals @ 7/10 with BetVictor
Home win to nil @ 7/4 with Betfred
