Cardiff v Bolton match preview

Following a blip over the New Year period, Cardiff’s promotion push now appears to be back on track following a 4-1 thrashing of Leeds last weekend. Now winning two of their last three by netting four goals, Neil Warnock’s side are continuing to surprise people this season, becoming serious contenders for the top two come the end of the campaign. Despite losing back-to-back home games before the defeat of Sunderland, Cardiff maintain a strong home record this term, winning 10 of their 14 games so far.

They have done so without necessarily having a prolific forward, with Junior Hoilett being their top scorer at this stage of the campaign with 7 goals to his name. Currently having a game in hand on 2nd-placed Derby and with Cardiff sitting just three points behind them, they could force themselves right back into contention with victory this weekend.

This is a result that Cardiff certainly won’t take for granted, after Bolton upset the applecart last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Bristol City at the Macron Stadium. The in-form Robins will have expected to take maximum points against Phil Parkinson’s men, who are now three points clear of the relegation zone. Given that their goal difference is significantly worse than both Hull and Barnsley, should both of those sides better Bolton’s results this weekend, they would return back to the bottom three.

Bolton’s away form in the Championship won’t give them cause for too much optimism, winning only once in their last 44 games on the road in the second-tier of English football. That victory came away to Sheffield United on December 30 - with their most recent win before that ironically coming at Cardiff back in April 2015.

Goals have been a feature of Cardiff’s recent home games, with three of their last five games at the Cardiff City Stadium featuring over 2.5 match goals. Warnock saw his men battle to a 1-1 draw at Millwall on Friday evening, but will know nothing less than three points will be satisfactory to their automatic promotion hopes.
