Cardiff City vs Aston Villa predictions for their Championship match in the Welsh capital on Saturday. Cardiff are aiming to make it two league wins out of two this season. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Aston Villa were thwarted by a resolute Hull City side in their Championship opener last weekend but are fancied to open their victory account away to Cardiff.

It was a very ordinary first full day of the second-tier season for both of the two promotion favourites as neither Villa nor Middlesbrough were able to win, but the second bite of the cherry should be a more palatable one for Steve Bruce’s side.

John Terry did not exactly have a Villa debut to remember in the 1-1 draw with the Tigers even though Gabby Agbonlahor put his side ahead, with Jarrod Bowen netting a second-half equaliser for the visitors.

Bruce was disappointed his team missed chances, with Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor in fine form, and also that they “didn’t play with the same intensity in the second half”.

The manager was happier that “we were close to blowing them away in the first half” and that underlines the potential there is for Villa to outclass most of their opponents this term.

If they are at their best, that could be the case against Cardiff even though the Bluebirds began with a 1-0 success away to Burton Albion thanks to a late goal from Danish striker Kenneth Zohore.

The former Brondby attacker, who bagged a couple of goals for his country at this summer’s European Under-21 Championship, progressed throughout last season, his first full campaign in English football, and could be a handful for Terry and his colleagues in the Villa defence.

But with Burton Albion being favourites for relegation, this is sure to be a much tougher test for Neil Warnock’s side.

It’s matches like this that Villa will need to win if they are to be up with the promotion challengers this season and they look worth backing to claim their first three-point haul before a similarly awkward trip to Reading on Tuesday.

Cardiff City vs Aston Villa stats

  • Aston Villa are seeking their first victory away to Cardiff since 1974
  • A clean sheet has been kept in five of the last six meetings of these clubs
  • Villa’s last three opening away league matches of the season have contained only one goal each
