These teams are surprisingly the ‘best of the rest’ outside the ‘big six’ in the Premier League this season and can both show why they are confounding expectations by sharing the spoils at Turf Moor.

The secret to the success of two sides who had seemed more likely to be fighting against relegation than for potential European football has been their away form – they have each gained significantly more points on their travels than at home so far.

That fact would point to Watford being an appealing bet here, but they do not have a good record at Turf Moor (see stats below) and Burnley are likely to prove harder to beat than Bournemouth, Southampton, Swansea and Newcastle, all of whom the Hornets have beaten on the road.

Nevertheless, Marco Silva’s side continue to prove something of a revelation this term and after giving Manchester United a scare recently when they fought back from 3-0 down to 3-2 before conceding a fourth goal, they held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road last weekend.

Spurs’ slump in form means Burnley are now level on points with them even though the Clarets lost 1-0 at Leicester last Saturday when they lost winger Robbie Brady after just half an hour to what looked a serious knee injury.

The Republic of Ireland international had scored the decisive goal only four days earlier when Sean Dyche’s side had won 2-1 at Bournemouth and his loss for any considerable length of time will surely be felt.

However, defensively Burnley are very solid and while their home matches this season have not been particularly high on entertainment, the fans will not be complaining that their team has kept four clean sheets out of seven.

It would be a surprise if this game veered away from the norm at this venue and a low-scoring stalemate looks a likely outcome.

Burnley vs Watford stats

  • None of the last eight matches between Burnley and Watford at either ground has resulted in an away win
  • Watford have not won away to Burnley in their last nine attempts
  • Only bottom-of-the-table Swansea have scored fewer home goals than Burnley in the Premier League this season
