Brighton vs Manchester City predictions for their Premier League match at the Amex Stadium on Saturday August 12. This is Brighton’s first game in the top flight since 1983. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Brighton will be buzzing at having such an attractive fixture as their first in the top flight for 34 years, and that excitement could increase their competitiveness against Manchester City.

Since they reached the FA Cup Final and were relegated in 1983, Brighton have plumbed the depths and soared back up again with the club’s very existence being in considerable doubt during several desperate years when they did not even have their own ground.

But largely thanks to life president Dick Knight and current chairman Tony Bloom, Brighton recovered their financial health and stability and fought up the league to finally clinch promotion to the promised land last term.

Just like play-off winners Huddersfield Town, who have been away from the elite 11 years longer, the Seagulls will have barely been able to contain themselves all summer at the thought of mixing it again every week with England’s best teams.

In contrast to the Terriers, however, who start off with a more mundane trip to Crystal Palace, Brighton are straight up against the big boys and the opposition does not come more difficult than Manchester City, who are the bookmakers’ favourites for the 2017-18 Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola has been splashing the cash at will this summer, spending £200million before the end of July on five players – Monaco duo Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy, right-backs Kyle Walker and Danilo and goalkeeper Ederson.

In contrast, Chris Hughton has been shopping largely in the bargain basement and with the exception of Australia international goalkeeper Matt Ryan and club record purchase Davy Propper from PSV Eindhoven, his signings at the time of writing were more likely to illicit the response of ‘Who?’

Nevertheless, Hughton had a very capable squad last term and they have had an encouraging pre-season, so the feelgood factor could enable them to at least run City very close while Guardiola’s men are still finding their stride.

Brighton vs Manchester City stats

  • This is the first league meeting between these clubs since 1989, when they met in what is now the Championship
