Everton are enduring what can now only be described as a thoroughly disappointing start to the season, and it may not get significantly better when they travel to the south coast this weekend.

The Toffees’ big summer spending spree, when they forked out all of Romelu Lukaku’s transfer fee and plenty more besides, has left manager Ronald Koeman struggling to find his best XI – and consequently to keep his job too.

A 1-0 home defeat to Burnley last time out left Everton down in 16th position in the Premier League table, while only one point collected from the first six available means they are also facing an uphill battle to progress from the Europa League group stage.

The Merseysiders are level on points with Sunday’s opponents Brighton but below them on goal difference, and face a team who have won their latest two home matches.

Brighton’s only slip-up at the Amex Stadium since being promoted to the top flight was against Manchester City on the opening weekend, subsequently beating West Brom and Newcastle who both entered this round of matches in the top half of the table.

Chris Hughton’s squad has the look of one that will ultimately find it very difficult to maintain their place at this highest level of English football, but winning home matches is essential in that quest and so far Brighton are faring pretty well in that regard.

What we do not expect here is a goalfest because both teams are having difficulty scoring, Brighton’s prospects hindered by striker Tomer Hemed’s continued suspension and Everton because they have palpably failed to sign a player who will get anywhere near to replacing Lukaku’s goals.

This is a match Koeman simply cannot afford to lose if he wants to remain in his position for much longer, but the draw that we are backing is unlikely to help him much either.

Brighton vs Everton stats

  • Both teams scored in the last six matches between Brighton and Everton
  • Everton have scored only one goal in their three away Premier League games so far this season
