Wolves are proving to be an absolute revelation this season and can take another significant step towards automatic promotion by winning away to Barnsley.

After finishing 14th and 15th in the two previous Championship campaigns, the famous old Midlands club have been completely transformed by their wealthy Chinese owners and Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes who has been advising them on football matters.

Mendes was clearly behind the decision to appoint his compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo as manager and the signing of players such as £15.8million midfielder Ruben Neves from Porto who, in fairness, has been the exception rather than the rule in terms of transfer fee outlays.

It is no surprise that Wolves have improved but nobody could have foreseen that they would be 12 points clear at this stage because their squad is not obviously stronger than those of, say, Derby, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

But whatever the formula, it is working a treat and only a monumental collapse would now prevent Wolves from playing Premier League football next term.

Barnsley would settle just for staying in the Championship, going into the weekend three places and two points above the relegation zone and interestingly they have recently been taken over by a consortium that includes Billy Beane, the baseball manager depicted by Brad Pitt in the excellent Moneyball film.

Presumably we can expect to see the Tykes making some innovative stats-based signings and this week they have brought in striker Kieffer Moore, who has scored 13 goals on loan at Rotherham from Ipswich this season.

From the start of November, Wolves have really put the hammer down in their quest to secure top spot in the Championship and, with 10 wins and two draws from their last 12 league games, it is difficult to see them slipping up here.

Their hosts have shown some improvement of late after a five-match losing streak but a consolation goal for Barnsley looks the best they can hope for.

Barnsley vs Wolves stats

  • Over 2.5 goals have been scored in all of the last five meetings of these clubs
  • Only one of the last 18 matches between Barnsley and Wolves hosted by either side has finished as a draw
  • Just two clubs have scored fewer home goals than Barnsley in the Championship this season
