Aston Villa vs Hull City betting tips

John Terry’s debut for Aston Villa will capture most attention as this season’s original Championship favourites start their campaign in what is a fascinating fixture for several reasons.

The former England captain was released by Chelsea this summer and now wears only the third different club shirt of his 19-year career, the other being that of Nottingham Forest during a six-match loan spell in 2000.

As he felt he could not play against Chelsea and clearly did not want to move abroad at this stage, Terry has opted to drop down a level and try to get a big club in Villa back up to the Premier League – and until this week they were the bookmakers’ favourites to do just that.

They have been leapfrogged in the betting by Middlesbrough, who have made some eye-catching signings, especially up front, but it will be interesting to see how Villa fare this term as their Chinese owner Dr Tony Xia has also spent big since he took over the club from Randy Lerner.

And then, to add to the intrigue in this game, there are the managers. Villa’s Steve Bruce is, of course, a Championship promotion expert having achieved it twice each with Birmingham City and Hull City, and the reception he will receive from the travelling supporters is difficult to gauge considering he walked out on the Tigers just before last season began.

In fairness though, Bruce was clearly unhappy with how the club was being run and that remains the feeling of the fans, so they may well give him cheers rather than jeers.

With Mike Phelan and then Marco Silva in charge, Hull were relegated last season and their Egyptian owners have now turned to former CSKA Moscow and Russia boss Leonid Slutsky in what was a bold decision considering his lack of experience in western Europe.

It could be either a brilliant move or a disaster and if pressed for our opinion we would side with the latter, so Villa and Terry are confidently expected to get off to a winning start.
