Accrington Stanley vs Sunderland betting tips

Sunderland are backed to keep up their promotion push with a victory in the first competitive match between these clubs for nearly 125 years.

The record books show the last official meeting as an FA Cup tie in January 1894 which Sunderland won 3-0, and in the intervening century and a quarter the Wearsiders and Accrington, who folded and then re-formed, have experienced vastly contrasting fortunes.

But now their paths have converged in League One, a division which Sunderland are making a pretty good job so far of trying to escape from after successive relegations.

The Mackems are second in the table, four points behind leaders Portsmouth and two clear of the play-off zone, with manager Jack Ross showing he was a shrewd appointment by the owners who took over the club in the summer even though it is his first job in England.

Ross has made the Black Cats very difficult to beat with a team comprising mainly youngsters and summer signings, plus a couple of players left over from the two previous bitterly disappointing campaigns.

Accrington, who were promoted last term, are in the third tier for the first time since 1959-60 and still occupy a healthy position in the top half of the table even though they have gone six games without a league win – they are through to round three of the FA Cup, however.

We think that record will become seven without a victory as Sunderland, despite being held by Wycombe and Walsall recently, are in the better form overall and their sequence of eight straight wins before those stalemates shows just what they are capable of.
