Wayne Rooney hopeful on England future after Everton transfer

Evertons new signing, English striker Wayne Rooney poses for a photograph with his club shirt

Wayne Rooney has admitted he is 'not focussed' on and England return right now, but is hopeful his Everton performances will ensure that he gets back into the international squad this season.

After losing his place in the Manchester United starting XI, Rooney has not made the last couple of England squads and some have speculated whether his international career is over.

However, at 31-years-old and with a return to Everton this summer, the all-time leading scorer for the Three Lions would like to get back into the England squad ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Asked about his ambitions to do just that, Rooney said: "Hopefully the performances are good for Everton and they won't be able to ignore me.

"I think I always play like I've got a point to prove. I'm ready to play and want to win."

Rooney was also keen to deny any reports that he was returning to Everton as a good, comfortable way to end his career. Make no mistake, there were other offers on the table and he comes back to Goodison Park to be successful.

"I'm not moving to a retirement home.

"I am excited and I'm looking at a challenge. I think it's the right time in my career and I'm ready for it.

"It's all right saying we are here to win trophies, and of course we want to. But it's on us as a football club to do that. That's why we have to make sure we do that."

Rooney has joined Everton for pre-season training and coiuld be involved when Ronaldo Koeman's men take on Gor Mahia  on Thursday.
