Sheffield United youngster Brooks called up to Wales squad for the first time

Head coach Chris Coleman of Wales

Wales have announced their squad for the vital upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland and Sheffield United youngster David Brooks has made the cut in Chris Coleman's 23-man selection.

The 20 year old, who has earlier this year represented both England and Wales at youth team level, has broke into the Sheffield United squad in recent weeks and after some star performances for the Blades, has been given the call-up to the Wales first team.

Also being called up to the squad for the first time is Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Maxwell is Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu, who has been included in the squad before but is yet to get any game time and Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn, who was the hero in the vital victory over Austria last time out.

Only two regulars in the squad miss out this time around as back-up defenders Jazz Richards and James Collins are unavailable for selection.

Brooks' inclusion may have come as a surprise given that he had featured for England's U20s earlier this year and his first team experience at Bramall Lane is relatively limited but Coleman has spoken to the Warrington-born forward in the past and has no qualms in including him in the squad.

"David Brooks has earned it, he has been great for Robert Page. He was excellent for Sheffield United in the derby. He's shown great promise for some years, luckily for us he has chosen Wales. I am sure that has caused some ripples over the Severn Bridge" said the Wales boss.

"But it is a feather in the cap for our system, our structure, that David is here. He has earned his chance."
