Manchester Utd agree £75m fee with Everton over Romelu Lukaku

  • Wayne Rooney could be set to head the opposite way as a makeweight in the deal
Romelu Lukaku looks set to join Manchester United this summer

Manchester United look set to secure a huge marquee signing this summer as they have agreed a £75m fee with Everton for the transfer of Belgium international Romelu Lukaku.

After seemingly having spent the majority of the transfer window so far chasing the signing of Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, it was sensationally announced on Thursday morning that Manchester United have agreed a fee with Everton for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku.

The fee, believed to be around £75m, is lower than the originally-thought £100m, but with the Red Devils Wayne Rooney perhaps being used as a makeweight as he potentially goes the other way and returns to Goodison Park, the fee would still be a huge one for the Toffees.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's one and only season at Manchester United proved to be relatively successful but with his age and the injury problems he suffered particularly at the end of the campaign, it was always likely that he would leave in favour of a new signing at the spearhead of the Red Devils' frontline.

Antoine Griezmann was heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford but decided to commit his future instead to Atletico Madrid following the club's transfer ban and it seemed Real Madrid were not willing to lower their asking price as United reportedly sniffed around Morata.

Lukaku initially joined Everton on loan for the 2013/2014 season and after he racked up 15 goals in 31 appearances during that spell, he signed for what was then a club-record fee and has since gone on to score a further 53 goals in 110 appearances over the following three years.

Given that it was Jose Mourinho who was in charge of Chelsea when he decided to allow Lukaku to leave for Goodison Park, it's something of a surprise to see the Portuguese boss make a return for the forward but it's not hard to see why he has done so given Lukaku's form in the last few seasons.

Everton fans will no doubt be devastated to see their star man potentially moving to a Premier League rival but a return for Wayne Rooney would be romantic no doubt, 13 years after he swapped the blue shirt of the Toffees for the red shirt of United for a £25m fee.
