Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney looking set for Everton return

  • Wayne Rooney has been linked with a move away from Manchester United for quite some time
  • The 31 year old looks all set for a return to Everton, 13 years after he left the club for Old Trafford

Everton have stepped up their interest in re-signing former star Wayne Rooney according to reports on Wednesday afternoon as the Manchester United captain looks set to finally leave Old Trafford this summer.

Having been linked with a big money move to China in February, Rooney eventually opted to stay with Manchester United for the remainder of the season but despite having a contract with the club that runs up until 2019, they look all set to offload their captain on a free transfer this summer.

As has always been rumoured, Everton are keen in a return for the man who burst onto the scene at Goodison Park as a fresh-faced 16 year old, before eventually moving to Manchester United for a fee of £25m in 2004.

13 years down the line and Rooney has well and truly cemented himself in both Manchester United's and the Premier League's history books by playing 553 games and scoring 253 goals for the club in all competitions, winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League along the way.

Rooney, who is now also England's record all-time goalscorer, has often said that the only Premier League club he would leave Manchester United for is Everton, the club he not only made his debut for but also grew up supporting as a child.

Despite only being 31, Rooney has slowly found himself phased out of manager Jose Mourinho's plans at Old Trafford over the last year and fans of the Red Devils appear to be ready to see their former star man move on from the club now as his influence dwindles.

He could still be a major player in the Premier League though and although his wages will not be cheap, the chance to re-sign such a talented player on a free transfer is one that will surely be interesting to both Ronald Koeman and the Everton hierarchy.
