Leicester City have signed defender Harry Maguire from Hull City for an undisclosed fee believed to be up to £17million.

The 24-year-old had one year remaining on his contract at Hull but after the club's relegation from the Premier League, he has joined the Foxes on a five-year deal.

Maguire becomes the club's first signing since Craig Shakespeare agreed a three-year deal as the permanent Leicester manager last week.

One of Hull’s most impressive performers during the 2016-17 campaign, Maguire revealed that Shakespeare had been a big influence on his decision to join Leicester over other clubs.

Maguire, who will link up with his new team-mates in early July at a pre-season training camp in Austria, said:

“There were a number of clubs interested, but when I met the manager here he pretty much swayed it in the direction of this club. He showed me the way the club is going. It’s on the up and it looks very promising for the future, so credit to the gaffer.
“You can see that with the structure of the club it’s looking upwards rather than down, so that was a big reason why as soon as I knew there was an interest I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
“It’s obviously a very exciting time for myself. Once I had my eyes on this club, I always wanted to join. Thankfully I’m here, so I can’t wait to get the season started and kick on.”

Maguire came through the ranks at his hometown club Sheffield United and made his debut against Cardiff City in the Championship in April 2011.

He went on to make 166 appearances for the Blades, scoring 12 goals, before joining Hull City for a fee of £2.5million in the summer of 2014.

After initially struggling to hold down a first-team place with the Tigers, Maguire spent a spell on loan with Wigan Athletic during the 2014-15 season but subsequently became a key part of the Hull defence and he made 36 appearances last term, scoring three goals. He captained the team in their 4-2 victory over Middlesbrough in April.
