Gareth Barry becomes Premier League's record appearance holder following Arsenal vs West Brom fixture

Former England midfielder Gareth Barry surpassed the record of Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs to become the Premier League's record appearance maker after Monday night's clash between Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion.

The 36 year old made his fourth Premier League appearance of the season for the Baggies as they went down 2-0 at the hands of Arsenal, but history was made as Barry surpassed Giggs' record of 632 appearances to become the new record holder.

In an 11 year spell as a first team player with Aston Villa was where Barry made the majority of these appearances, after signing as a youth team player from Brighton & Hove Albion. He captained the Midlands club and became the youngest player to reach 300 EPL appearances at just 26 years old during his time at Villa Park.

Barry enjoyed the most successful period of his career at Manchester City, whom he joined from Villa for a fee of around £12m in 2009. In his four seasons at the club he won his only two major trophies, the FA Cup and the Premier League and also competed in the Champions League for the Citizens.

A season-long loan deal at Everton was eventually turned into a permanent move and despite his ageing years he amassed 131 appearances for the Merseyside club, just one less than he made for Man City during his time at the Etihad Stadium and he then signed for West Bromwich Albion for an undisclosed fee this summer.

"Gareth has been a wonderful professional and still is" said WBA boss Tony Pulis after the game.

"We hope he keeps performing like that until the end of the season."
