FIFA to back down on poppy ban following talks with UK football associations

  • FIFA are set to lift their ban on displaying the poppy symbol in international football kits
  • All four UK associations were fined for displaying the poppy in last year's international fixtures

World governing body FIFA are set to lift the ban on displaying the poppy symbol on international football kits following talks with UK football associations after fines for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland last year.

Last November England and Scotland were both fined for wearing black armbands with the poppy symbol stitched on, whilst both Wales and Northern Ireland received fines for displaying the emblem on their respective stadiums.

But a new draft proposal to a rule change has been sent from FIFA to it's members in the last week stating that the use of this symbol could be allowed under new rules providing the opposition and competition organisers of the particular match agree to it's inclusion.

The fines drew widespread criticism across these countries last year with Prime Minister Theresa May even condemning FIFA but the FA have not yet commented on this rule change until it has been confirmed and accepted by member nations.

England will face Germany in a friendly at Wembley Stadium in November if both teams manage to avoid the play-offs in the period of international games that incorporate remembrance weekend and it is understood that the German FA have no objection to the poppy being used.
