Transfer News: Birmingham City latest club to offer contract to John Terry

  • John Terry has left Chelsea following the expiry of his contract
  • Could Birmingham City be the defender's next destination?
John Terry of Chelsea

Speculation regarding John Terry's future continues to rage on following the expiry of his contract at Chelsea and Championship side Birmingham City are the latest club to be linked to the former England captain.

Birmingham City are the latest club to throw their hat into the ring as speculation regarding John Terry's next club continues to be rife. With Harry Redknapp in charge, it's perhaps no surprise that the Blues are looking towards the ex-England captain.

It has been clear for some time that Terry was no longer part of Conte's plans which is understandable given his age and with opportunities limited in the last couple of seasons at Stamford Bridge, John Terry has decided to end his successful Chelsea career on a high this year.

Since the announcement that the centre back would be leaving the London club, many teams have reportedly expressed an interest in his signature, including AFC Bournemouth and Brum's fellow Midlands clubs Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion.

Terry made his debut for Chelsea in the 1998/1999 season and over the next 18 seasons he would go on to rack up over 700 appearances in all competitions, winning five Premier Leagues, five FA Cups and even a Champions League trophy along the way.

He also made over 70 caps for England during his international career and was captain of the side for some time until off-field allegations soured his career at international level at least and eventually he was slowly forced out of the team.

Although he no longer possesses the most pace in the league, Terry retains his defensive intelligence and bravery and may feel that a step down in divisions is not yet required, although Redknapp has confirmed that the Blues have made an offer for the 36 year old.

“I’d love to have him at the football club. He’s a fantastic captain and great leader. We’ve made him a good offer and we have done the best we can. It’s up to John now, but we would love him at Birmingham."

“He played for me the other week in Michael Carrick’s testimonial. I had John at the back with Jamie Carragher and I would have them two together all day long. They were fantastic."
