Alexis Sanchez due back training with Arsenal FC this weekend

Alexis Sanchez, who is being strongly linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer, will be back training with the Gunners on Sunday, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

The Chilean forward, who scored 30 goals for Arsenal last season including the opener in the 2-1 FA Cup Final triumph against Chelsea, is returning later than most of his team-mates due to his participation at last month’s FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Chile went the full distance in that competition, losing the final 1-0 to Germany on July 2.

Sanchez and his German clubmate, Shkodran Mustafi, both played the full 90 minutes of that match and have subsequently been on their holidays for the last four weeks.

But they will begin training on Sunday as they bid to gain full fitness ahead of the start of the Premier League season, which Arsenal kick off at home to Leicester City on Friday August 11.

Whether Sanchez is still an Arsenal player by then, or indeed the close of the transfer window, is in some doubt for he continues to be linked with a move to Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain.

Sanchez’s contract expires next year and he has yet to commit to a new one, but Wenger has indicated his star player will resume training as normal this weekend while the rest of the Arsenal team play in the Emirates Cup.

Wenger said:

“Alexis and Mustafi, their first training session will be on Sunday, the day we play against Sevilla.
“They are practising on the day, yes. First of all you make a really good check-up of where they are, how much they have worked during their break.”

Arsenal go up against Benfica on Saturday and then Sevilla on Sunday before turning their attention to the FA Community Shield against Chelsea a week later.

Wenger has revealed both Sanchez and Mustafi will have to be eased back in over the next fortnight.

He added:

“Once you know where you stand, they need an adjusted program and to see how quickly you can fit them in again.
“Of course it depends as well on what is the need in the squad, what is their quality.
“All of these things together make your decision. Do you put them on the bench when they are not ready [to start]?
“It is easier to put a striker on the bench than a defender sometimes because in a short period they can make an impact. We'll see.”
