Wales vs Panama betting tips

Panama are looking forward to their World Cup debut next summer, but they are also breaking new ground on Tuesday when, for the first time, they visit Wales who have missed out on a place in Russia.

The Central American nation snatched an automatic World Cup spot right at the end of the CONCACAF qualifying campaign when they won 2-1 at home to Costa Rica to move above the United States, who also missed out on the play-off position to Honduras.

It was a terrific achievement by the Canal Men (Panama Canal…geddit?) who have gradually enhanced their profile over the last few years and were runners-up in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This is the second match of their short European tour which began in Austria with a game against Iran on Friday (result not known at the time of writing) and the idea is obviously to give the team a flavour of opponents from outside their own continent ahead of Russia 2018.

Hernan Dario Gomez, a Colombian formerly in charge of his own country’s national team and Ecuador’s, is the Panama coach and has become only the second man to lead three different nations to a World Cup – Henri Michel was the first with Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia.

Gomez has lost eight of the players he originally called into his squad for this tour due to injury and so was left with 21, among whom are Deportivo La Coruna winger Ismael Diaz and a trio that ply their trade in MLS including San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Anibal Godoy.

Wales, of course, missed out on any chance of following their semi-final achievement at Euro 2016 with a first World Cup appearance since 1958 when they lost their last qualifier 1-0 at home to the Republic of Ireland.

Chris Coleman’s side were away to France on Friday and whatever the outcome of that game, this looks a much more winnable contest and is one in which the Dragons are expected to prevail with something to spare.

Wales vs Panama stats

  • This is the first ever meeting between these countries
  • Before Friday’s match against Iran, Panama had won only one of their previous five away games
  • All of Panama’s four matches immediately before the Iran fixture had contained over 2.5 goals
