Portugal are without Cristiano Ronaldo but should beat a United States side yet to appoint a new manager following their shock elimination from the 2018 World Cup.

Ronaldo has been rested during this international break, with he and fellow wingers Nani and Ricardo Quaresma missing the friendly matches at home to Saudi Arabia and the USA in Viseu and Leiria respectively.

Coach Fernando Santos wants to take a look at some fringe players before next summer’s World Cup in Russia and that is likely to mean opportunities for the likes of uncapped duo Bruma and Rony Lopes, while Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes could also stake their claims.

The European champions needed to win their last qualifier to reach the World Cup directly and did so 2-0 at home to Switzerland, with whom they dominated their group and finished level on points as Portugal’s greater goal difference held sway.

But they will not be joined by the United States, who remarkably fell at the final hurdle as a 2-1 defeat away to Trinidad & Tobago last month meant they were leapfrogged by both Panama and Honduras to miss out on the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Only three months earlier, coach Bruce Arena had led the USA to the CONCACAF Gold Cup title, but he resigned three days after the World Cup exit and Dave Sarachan steps up from being assistant until a permanent successor can be identified.

Last time these countries met, in Manaus during the 2014 World Cup group stage, Portugal needed a last-gasp Silvestre Varela goal to claim a 2-2 draw.

However, they are a stronger force now, even without Ronaldo and Co, and should take care of opponents who are inevitably at a low ebb following their recent bitter disappointment.

Portugal vs United States stats

  • These countries have met six times previously, all between 1978 and 2014, split evenly between two wins each and two draws
  • The last two meetings were at the 2002 and 2014 World Cups, USA winning 3-2 in South Korea followed by a 2-2 draw in Brazil
  • Both of Portugal’s wins against the United States came with a 1-0 scoreline in friendly matches at home
