What is the banker double?

The banker double is a bet designed to make the most of a bookmaker free bet offer. Sometimes, when offering free bets as a welcome bonus to a customer signing up for the first time, bookmakers place a minimum odds stipulation for the qualifying bet.

Therefore, if you pick out two short-priced favourites and combine them in a double, the odds will increase and comfortably meet the criteria to qualify for a free bet.

Why a double, not a treble or accumulator?

There’s no point being too ambitious with your first bet! The whole point of betting, besides having fun, is to win money and so you need to give yourself a chance of doing that right from the outset.

With a treble or bigger accumulator, the risks are greater because you need to get all the selections correct for the bet to be a winner and just two is much more achievable.

How do you choose the banker double?

Generally, we think the best policy for this type of bet is to select from the Match Result market, i.e. the outcome of a match – home win, away win or draw.

The reason for this is that there are fewer variables than in the peripheral markets that are based on goals – over the 90 minutes, you would expect the better team to come out on top regardless of influences that could affect the other markets e.g. red cards etc.

We tend to go for two hot favourites at odds of between 4/6 and 1/2 so that combined in a double, they pay bigger than even-money.

How do I know how much I can win?

The best thing to do is go to the bookmaker’s website, click on your selections and then enter a stake. Then multiply the returns x2 to work out what it would be when you place your free bet on the same double – but then deduct the second stake as that is not returned from a free bet.
