FC Barcelona are disputing favouritism with their arch-rivals Real Madrid for the 2017-18 Copa del Rey in Spain as the Camp Nou club look to win a fourth title in a row, having lifted the trophy each year from 2015-17.

Background to the Copa del Rey

The Copa del Rey, the King’s Cup, is so named because the effective founder, Carlos Padros who went on to become president of Madrid FC (later Real Madrid), believed it to be a fitting tribute for Alfonso XIII’s coronation in 1902.

The competition produced the first ever meeting between Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real who now engage in El Clasico, one of the most watched sporting fixtures in the world.

The Copa del Rey is considered the premier cup competition in Spanish football and before the formation of La Liga in 1929, it acted as the national championship.

The Copa del Rey takes a knockout format and has produced a total of 14 different winners with Barcelona the most successful team (29 times) followed by Athletic Bilbao (23), Real Madrid (19), Atletico Madrid (10), Valencia (7), Real Zaragoza (6), Sevilla (5), Espanyol (4), Real Union (4), Real Sociedad (2), Real Betis (2), Deportivo La Coruna (2), Arenas (1) and Mallorca (1).

Barcelona are also the most successful club in the current decade, winning the trophy in 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

In the last three years they have beaten three different rivals to get their hands on the trophy, firstly doing so at their own Camp Nou with a 3-1 success against Athletic Bilbao. The two most recent finals were at the now defunct Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid, where Barcelona beat Sevilla in 2016 in extra time and Alaves by a 3-1 margin in 2017.

However, the bookmakers believe Real Madrid could upset Barca’s hopes of a four-timer, making the European champions slight favourites to lift the cup for the first time since 2014.

Both clubs enjoyed routine victories away from home against lower-division opposition in the first leg of their opening ties, Real Madrid winning 2-0 on the short journey to Fuenlabrada while Barcelona triumphed 3-0 against Real Murcia.
