Real Madrid vs Barcelona betting tips

Barcelona will be enthused by the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and could be worth siding with in this game, but even a victory may not be enough to secure them the Spanish Super Cup.

The first leg of this pre-season head-to-head between La Liga champions and the Copa del Rey holders was a slow burner, Gerard Pique’s own goal being the only significant event of the first 75 minutes or so.

But then it all came alive as Lionel Messi equalised from the penalty spot, Ronaldo restored Real’s lead with a brilliant solo effort and was then sent off for two rapid bookable offences – taking his shirt off while celebrating and then a dive, before pushing the referee in the back when leaving the pitch. Despite their disadvantage, Real still made it 3-1 through Marco Asensio.

Ronaldo did not start the match at Camp Nou, so coach Zinedine Zidane could name the same starting line-up for the second leg or, as is more likely, bring back Luka Modric in place of Mateo Kovacic after the former Tottenham man was suspended for being sent off in the 2014 Super Cup, with bans being exclusive to this competition.

Although the European champions appear to have the upper hand at present over their arch-rivals, away teams in El Clasico have the better recent record (see stats below) and Barcelona won the recent meeting in Miami by the odd goal in five.

Lionel Messi has netted six goals in his last four starts at the Bernabeu and while the winning margin is likely to be narrow, which would mean Real Madrid lifting the trophy, Barcelona can restore some pride with a victory to give them a boost going into the new La Liga campaign.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona stats

  • Both teams have scored in 22 of the last 23 El Clasico matches
  • Over 2.5 goals have been scored in 20 of the last 22
  • Barcelona have won on three of their last four visits to the Bernabeu Stadium, scoring at least three goals in each of those victories
  • None of the last five El Clasico games has been won by the home team
