The 2017-2018 Champions League journey begins shortly with the qualifying rounds taking place over the summer - but which team will be lifting the famous trophy in May 2018?

History of the Champions League

The Champions League is the most illustrious club competition in the world. Bringing together the top clubs from all of Europe, the tournament pits the best players in the world against each other and year upon year you can expect drama and entertainment in abundance as teams battle it out to make history in Europe's elite football competition.

Last year Real Madrid were the team lifting the trophy in May once again. A Cristiano Ronaldo brace helped Los Blancos to win the competition for a record 12th time as they overcame Juventus in the final and unsurprisingly, they'll be one of the favourites once again next year having now lifted the trophy three times in the last four years.

That victory for the Spanish club last year extended their lead over the next most successful club, AC Milan, to an impressive five trophies. After winning the competition five times, teams are allowed to keep the trophy and the only teams to achieve this feat are Real Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Prior to 1992, the tournament had been known as the European Cup and was slightly different in layout. In these times only the reigning champions, plus the champions of each domestic division, were allowed into the tournament and it was played in a knock-out fashion, with group stages introduced in 1992 along with the chance in name.

This has only helped to see the competition's appeal grow as several teams from the major nations can now compete and the final of the Champions League has become the most watched annual sporting event in the world and it's popularity only appears to be growing year upon year.

Champions League 2017/2018 Season Preview

The Champions League is a tough tournament to call in advance as it's tough to tell which teams will be in top form in their domestic campaign and looking to take that into Europe. That said, you can always expect the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and of course the holders Real Madrid to be in among the favourites.

Carrying the Premier League cross in the competition this year will be five teams. Manchester United and Liverpool will have to go through qualifying after their Europa League win and fourth placed finish respectively, whilst Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and the league winners Chelsea will enter in the group stages.

Will somebody outside of the major three be able to break their stronghold on this competition? Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have all reached the final in recent years without managing to lift the trophy and they'll be hoping for a successful campaign this time around, although with bigger clubs sniffing around their key man, it's always likely to be a struggle.

Before the group stage fun gets underway though there are still several rounds of qualifying to get through before we know who will be competing in what is bound to be another thrilling edition of this magnificent competition.

Champions League Outright Odds

Odds are available already on the teams that are confirmed to be competing in the Champions League next season and the bookmakers make Barcelona and Real Madrid the favourites for the trophy and you have to imagine that the two El Clasico rivals will be among the top teams in the competition once again.

Of course alongside these two are Bayern Munich among the favourites, with odds of around 5/1 and 11/2 available on all three of these teams. As you'd perhaps expect, the next batch of teams in the running include the likes of Juventus (9/1) and Atletico Madrid (14/1), whilst most of the English clubs have surprisingly short odds given how poor these sides have performed in the competition in recent seasons.

These odds are likely to change as teams progress through the Champions League qualifying sections but check the table below for the latest outright odds on the Champions League 2017/2018 winner.

Our Top 3 Bets

Looking for some Champions League betting tips? Every matchday we will update this section with our Top 3 Champions League betting tips for the midweek games. Prior to the competition getting underway however, we can only look at the outright market and give our outright tip which is as follows...

Real Madrid to win the 2017/2018 Europa League at 5/1 with bet365

Real Madrid just seem to have a real love affair with this competition. Having waited for so long to finally earn the 10th Champions League trophy of 'La Decima' as it was dubbed by the Spanish press, they've now gone on something of a streak to win three out of the last four Champions League's, including last year thanks to a comfortable win in the final over Juventus.

Zinedine Zidane has only been a manager for less than two years and yet he's already got his hands on the trophy twice. With players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric at his disposal, it's difficult to see which teams can overcome Zidane and his charges. Could they do the unthinkable and make it four UCL wins in five years?
