The 2017-2018 Champions League group stage is in full swing - so which team will lift the famous trophy in May 2018?

History of the Champions League

The Champions League is the most illustrious club competition in the world. Bringing together the top clubs from all of Europe, the tournament pits the best players in the world against each other and year upon year you can expect drama and entertainment in abundance as teams battle it out to make history in Europe's elite football competition.

Last season, Real Madrid were the team lifting the trophy in May once again. A Cristiano Ronaldo brace helped Los Blancos to win the competition for a record 12th time as they overcame Juventus in the final and unsurprisingly, they are among the favourites again this season having now lifted the trophy three times in the last four years.

That victory for the Spanish club in 2017 extended their lead over the next most successful club, AC Milan, to an impressive five trophies. After winning the competition five times, teams are allowed to keep the trophy and the only clubs to achieve this feat are Real Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Before 1992, the competition had been known as the European Cup and was significantly different in layout. Back then, only the reigning champions, plus the champions of each domestic division, were allowed into the tournament and it was played on a knockout basis, with group stages introduced in 1992 along with the change in name.

This has only served to see the competition's appeal grow as several teams from the major nations can now compete and the final of the Champions League has become the most watched annual sporting event in the world, with its popularity growing year upon year.

Champions League 2017/2018 Season Guide

The Champions League is a tough tournament to call in its early stages as it is difficult to tell which teams will hold their form throughout their domestic campaign and also in Europe. That said, you can always expect the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and, of course, holders Real Madrid to be among the favourites.

Carrying the Premier League cross in the competition this year are five teams - Manchester United and Liverpool qualified via their Europa League win and through the play-offs respectively, while Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and league winners Chelsea went directly into the group stage.

Will someone outside the 'big three' be able to break their stranglehold on this competition which has lasted five years? Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have all reached the final in recent years without managing to lift the trophy and they will be hoping for a successful campaign this time around.

Champions League Outright Odds

Odds are available for who will win the Champions League and the bookmakers make Real Madrid the favourites for the trophy. You have to imagine they and El Clasico rivals Barcelona will be among the top teams in the competition once again.

Of course, alongside these two are Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich also among the favourites with the top four all priced between 4/1 and 7/1. As you would perhaps expect, the next batch of teams in the running include the likes of Juventus (16/1) and Atletico Madrid (22/1), with that duo bigger prices than English trio Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea despite how poorly those sides have performed in the competition in recent seasons.

Our Top 3 Bets

Looking for some Champions League betting tips? Every match-day we will update this section with our Top 3 Champions League betting tips for the midweek games. Before the competition got under way,  however, we had a look at the outright market and gave our outright tip which is as follows...

Real Madrid to win the 2017/2018 Europa League at 9/2 with BetVictor

Real Madrid just seem to have a real love affair with this competition. Having waited for so long to finally earn the 10th Champions League trophy of 'La Decima' as it was dubbed by the Spanish press, they have now gone on something of a streak to win three out of the last four Champions Leagues, including last season thanks to a comfortable win in the final over Juventus.

Zinedine Zidane has only been a manager for less than two years and yet he has already got his hands on the trophy twice. With players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric at his disposal, it's difficult to see which teams can overcome Zidane and his charges. Could they do the unthinkable and make it four UCL wins in five years?

Our Top 3 Champions League bets for October 17-18

Tuesday

1) APOEL Nicosia v Borussia Dortmund – Away win to nil @ Evens with MarathonBet

Although Dortmund’s defensive solidity of earlier in the season appears to have eluded them of late, they should be able to return from Cyprus with three points and a clean sheet.

That is exactly what Tottenham Hotspur did three weeks ago when winning 3-0 and with both teams having scored only twice in APOEL’s 14 matches so far this season, this should be a straightforward evening for the Germans.

Wednesday

2) CSKA Moscow v Basel – Home win @ 21/20 with BetFred

This prediction flies in the face of what happened on the last match-day because CSKA were really poor defensively in a 4-1 defeat at home to Manchester United, whereas Basel dished out a 5-0 thrashing to Benfica.

But since then, the Russian side have tightened up at the back in answer to that wake-up call with two clean sheets and are fancied to maintain their historically strong record against Swiss opposition.

3) Chelsea v Roma – Home win and under 4.5 goals in the match @ 19/20 with BetStars

This is not expected to be a goalfest because Roma are proving defensively very solid this season, but Chelsea are fancied to get back on track after successive Premier League defeats.

Manager Antonio Conte will not want to suffer another disappointment, especially against a team from his homeland, and the Blues have been saving their best form for the Champions League so far this season.
