Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk odds

Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk betting preview

With their chances of domestic success looking very minimal at the moment, Roma will be hoping for some long-awaited European success this season. As things stand in Serie, la Maggica occupy third place although their chances of slipping out of the top four and losing their spot in the Champions League are much higher than their chances of catching top two as they sit 15 points away from Juventus and 16 from Napoli as things stand.

After being handed both Atletico Madrid and Chelsea in their group, many fans of Roma will have perhaps been expecting a first round exit, but having negotiated a way to finishing top of that very tough group, they'll be desperate to go far into the competition. First of all though, they'll have to come from behind against a Shakhtar Donetsk outfit that have proved difficult to overcome in recent weeks. The home win is priced at 7/10 with William Hill.

Shakhtar Donetsk have been the best side in Ukrainian football in recent seasons and this year has been no different so far. With 22 games on the board so far Hirnyky currently sit five points clear of Dynamo Kyiv in second place and they look set to add yet another title to their trophy cabinet this year. The question is, can they couple that domestic success with a run further into the latter stages of the Champions League?

Like their Round of 16 opponents Roma, Shakhtar were handed a very tough group on paper but they managed to overcome Italian giants Napoli to secure second spot, even beating Pep Guardiola's previously unbeaten Manchester City in the final group stage match to boot. The men in Orange and Black lead the tie 2-1 so an away draw at 3/1 with Betfred will send them through, but they'll be after the win at 17/4 with Unibet

Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk predictions

We're backing goals here. Shakhtar's main strengths lie in attack and we've seen that in recent games as they have racked up 15 goals in their last four matches, so defending from the front is the most likely tactic for them to adopt in this game. Both teams have scored in five of their seven UCL games this season and Roma have kept just two clean sheets in their last thirteen. The home win and BTTS bet looks good to us at 11/5 with Betfair.

Edin Dzeko continues to be prolific at the spearhead of this Roma attack. The Bosnia & Herzegovina international has racked up 16 goals in all competitions so far this season, including some pivotal goals in the Champions League. His aerial prowess is always a threat to any defence and we can see him getting on the scoresheet in this game for his fourth Champions League goal of the campaign.
