Red Star v CSKA match preview

Just how Red Star come out in this game should be fascinating to see, with the Serbian outfit now featuring in what is their first game since the winter break. Playing multiple friendlies to keep themselves ticking over, the Serbian league leaders most recently faced a Russian side in Zenit, losing 1-0 in what is presumed to have been preparation for this upcoming tie.

During this lengthy Europa League campaign - which started back in June 2017 - Red Star have won six of their eight home games to date, with Arsenal being the only side to defeat them in the competition on their own turf this season. Also unbeaten away from home in the group stages, getting a positive result at home on Tuesday night would set them up with a real chance of progressing to the next round of the competition.

Like their Serbian counterparts, CSKA are also coming into this game with it being their first competitive fixture since before Christmas, taking part in five friendlies since January 21. CSKA defeated Elche 3-0 last Tuesday, as they now look to be the side less affected by potential rust in this meeting.

The Russian side were unfortunate to miss out on the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing the group stages with nine points, with it ultimately being their home form that let them down, losing two of their three games at the VEB Arena. Currently 10 points off Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League title race, the Europa League may well become a priority for Viktor Goncharenko’s side this weekend.

When two eastern European sides meet after a winter break, it’s always difficult to anticipate what sort of contest to expect in the early weeks, with much of the game depending on just how well the two squads have looked after themselves in the break. CSKA’s return to competitive action this time 12 months ago saw them draw 0-0 with Zenit in the Russian Premier League, while Red Star secured a 2-0 victory over Novi Pazar.
