Maribor vs Spartak Moscow predictions for their Champions League match in Slovenia on Wednesday. These clubs are in the same group as Liverpool and Sevilla. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Spartak Moscow are fancied to make a winning return to the Champions League as they play their first group-stage match of this competition since 2012-13.

Only two Russian clubs qualify for the Champions League and having finished second in their domestic competition in 2011-12, a string of fifth and sixth places followed for Spartak until they made the impressive leap to be title winners by seven points last season.

It was a spectacular start for manager Massimo Carrera in his first campaign in charge, with the Italian, who was previously assistant to Antonio Conte at Juventus and the national team, guiding his side to victory in most of the big local derbies against the likes of CSKA and Lokomotiv.

Things are not going as well so far this term as Spartak are in mid-table after nine rounds of matches having lost three times against their main rivals for the crown, but a 1-0 win on Saturday against Rubin Kazan should have restored some confidence.

And they will be optimistic of making their class count against Maribor, who are through to this phase of the competition for the third time with their latest appearance being in 2014-15.

The Slovenians won three ties to get here, against the champions of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland before an away goal against Hapoel Be’er Sheva proved decisive when Maribor won 1-0 at home to the Israelis in the second leg.

This is somewhat a clash of styles because Maribor are defensively very solid but do not score that many goals, whereas Spartak often rely on the threat of Netherlands international forward Quincy Promes, who has been a revelation in Russia, to override their leakiness at the back.

This is a match where we will overlook current form to focus on the general quality possessed by the two teams and Spartak can put their domestic struggles to one side to successfully launch their European campaign before hosting Liverpool later this month.

Maribor vs Spartak Moscow stats
