It’s unlikely to be a St Valentine’s Day massacre, but Liverpool are entitled to be hopeful of a win in Portugal that would put them on course to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

However, as the stats below indicate, this has not been a particularly successful country for the Reds to visit since their days of being regular kings of Europe came to an end in the 1980s.

It will certainly be no walkover for Jurgen Klopp’s side, even though they enjoyed two 7-0 triumphs during the group stage away to Maribor and at home to Spartak Moscow.

Those romps helped to make it a largely convincing autumn campaign for Liverpool, although there were still a few nagging doubts about them defensively when they squandered leads, including 3-0 in Spain, to draw both matches with Sevilla and they failed to put away Spartak in a 1-1 stalemate which they dominated.

But the main thing was that they secured top spot in the group and thus will be at home in the second leg of this tie, and you have to think that the famous Anfield atmosphere on a European night will carry them through unless the first game has gone unexpectedly badly.

Porto got off to a poor start when they lost 3-1 at home to Besiktas and they were still up against it to qualify after a 3-2 defeat away to RB Leipzig in their third group game.

Ultimately, they needed to win at home to Monaco on the final match-day to be sure of going through and added a 5-2 triumph to their 3-0 away success against last season’s semi-finalists to render the Germans’ result on the same night irrelevant.

Generally a more formidable proposition on their own pitch, Porto look decent value to hold Liverpool and make the Premier League team do the hard work back on Merseyside.

Porto vs Liverpool stats

  • This is the fifth match between these clubs in European competitions, Liverpool having won both previous meetings at Anfield after drawing on each visit to Portugal
  • Porto have won three of their four home matches against English opposition this decade
  • Liverpool have not won any of their last five away matches in Portugal
