Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid predictions for their Champions League match at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. Atletico will be knocked out if they fail to win this game. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Atletico Madrid have reached two of the last four Champions League finals but are virtually certain to make an early exit from this season’s competition, regardless of what happens at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

This is not the only group in which three big-hitters were pooled together and along with Borussia Dortmund, it looks very much as though another runner-up of the last half-dozen years, Atletico, will be heading into the knockout stage of the Europa League instead.

Champions League qualification is now out of the hands of Diego Simeone’s side in the sense that if Roma win at home to Qarabag, which they are a best-priced 1/10 to do, then it will not matter how Atletico fare against Chelsea.

Therefore, the main issue is likely to surround who finishes top of Group C and victory for Chelsea in this game would ensure they advance as winners.

However, as they lost and drew in their two meetings with Roma, putting them behind the Italians on the head-to-head rule, a stalemate with the Spaniards would leave the Blues staring at the prospect of finishing second and a potential last-16 meeting with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona.

Before the weekend, Chelsea had inflicted Atletico’s only defeat of the season, 2-1 in Madrid thanks to a last-gasp Michy Batshuayi goal, with the Spaniards’ biggest problem, which has wrecked their Champions League hopes, being far too many draws including both at home and away against Qarabag.

This is not the easiest match to predict with Atletico having been so solid at the back this season – five consecutive clean sheets before Saturday’s home match against Real Sociedad – and Chelsea very strong at home, but we will give Antonio Conte’s side the vote to claim the success they need to clinch top spot.

Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid stats

  • These clubs have met six times previously in European competitions, equally divided between two wins each and two draws
  • At Stamford Bridge there has been one victory each, 3-1 to Atletico in the 2013-14 Champions League semi-finals and 4-0 to Chelsea in the 2009-10 group stage
  • Atletico have won only one of their other 10 matches away to English opponents, against Leicester City in 1997
