Arsenal v FC Koln betting preview

Arsenal have been contenders in the Champions League for the last 18 seasons but after a poor campaign in the Premier League last time around, they have returned to European football's second tier competition this time around. Perhaps they will have more chance of winning this competition however, as the Gunners only made it to the Round of 16 in the UCL in the last eight consecutive seasons.

It's been a pretty poor start to the Premier League campaign for Arsene Wenger's men too. Although they have picked up home wins over Bournemouth and Leicester City, away from the Emirates the North Londoners have gone down in morale-crushing defeats to Stoke City and Liverpool. Can they harness that home advantage again though to pick up three points here at odds of 1/3 with William Hill?

FC Koln enjoyed a fine season in the Bundesliga last time around. Although one of the strongest teams in the country in the 1960's and 1970's, the club haven't been able to compete for honours in recent years and have flitted between the top two divisions but last year, they managed to secure a place in the Europa League as they secured a 5th place finish in the top tier, above the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke.

It's been a dreadful start to the new campaign for the Billy Goats though as they've gone down in three defeats in their first three games. Peter Stöger's men have lost to Borussia Monchengladbach, Hamburg and Augsburg so far, shipping seven goals and managing to score just one. With confidence clearly low, it would be a real shock if the German club managed a win in London at odds of 10/1 with Betfair.

There's a clear gulf in class between the quality of these two teams and in terms of their experience on the European stage. The Billy Goats haven't made it to this stage of this competition since 1993 and away from home, given the poor results they've endured so far this term, we're anticipating a difficult match for them on Thursday night. Arsenal should be able to win with a one goal handicap at 10/11 with Ladbrokes.

With Alexandre Lacazette coming in as first choice striker over the summer, Olivier Giroud will be expecting to be handed a starting berth in the Europa League at least. When given the opportunity, the French striker is more than capable of delivering - he's racked up 99 goals in all competitions over his five seasons at the Emirates despite many appearances coming from the bench. The ex-Montpellier man is our anytime goalscorer pick here at 20/21 with bet365.

Recommended bets:
Arsenal to win with a one goal handicap @ 10/11 with Ladbrokes
Olivier Giroud to score at any time @ 20/21 with bet365
