The history of the Allsvenskan

The first ball kicked in Sweden’s Allsvenskan was on 3 August 1924. Debuting in the 1924-25 season, the new tournament brought together the regional cups of the Svenska Serien under one league. For the first time in Swedish football history, teams from across the country would be competing together – the inaugural season’s champions were Gothenburg’s GAIS.

Teams played through the harsh Swedish winters until 1959, when the Allsvenskan season dates were changed to take advantage of the warmer spring and summer months. Beginning around March, the season ran until November – a schedule that still stands today.

International acclaim reached the Swedish Allsvenskan in 1979, when Malmö FF, fresh of the back of five straight championship wins, faced Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in the European Cup Final. Victory was not to be however, with a Trevor Francis goal on the stroke of half-time enough to seal the win for England’s Forest.

The format of the league changed in 1982, with the champion now decided by a play-off between the top teams. Though this format would only last until 1993, with a return to the traditional league format. IFK Göteborg dominated the mid-90s, before the pendulum of success swung in the direction of the island team of Djurgårdens, crowned champions three times in four years from 2002-2005.

64 clubs have competed in the Swedish top division since its inception, with the current league holding 16 members. Malmö FF have been the most successful team historically.

What are the most popular Allsvenskan bets?

The Allsvenskan remains a popular league with punters due to it being a rare summer season in the northern hemisphere. Kicking off in March and running through until the Autumn, the league doesn’t clash with many other European divisions and as such, provides a great opportunity for football fans to get their fix over the summer months.

On this page we will post our favourite bets for the upcoming fixtures, but during the off-season in England, we will produce match previews and predictions for each and every Allsvenskan fixture. We’ll also include plenty of tips from these leagues in our daily tips including our Daily TrebleDaily Double and Over 2.5 goals tips.
