For the second consecutive campaign, the Catalan giants are defending the domestic double having finished one point ahead of their arch-rivals Real Madrid at the top of the table in 2015-16, with Champions League runners-up Atletico Madrid a further two points adrift back in third place.

Luis Enrique’s side then added the Copa del Rey again with a 2-0 extra-time triumph over Europa League heroes Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in the capital city.

Barcelona have already added another trophy to their cabinet this season, winning 5-0 on aggregate against Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup, and are now aiming to move to the top of La Liga table at the expense of Real Madrid who visit their neighbours Atletico in the capital city derby.

Atletico had been showing the way until they lost two matches out of three, both away from home against Sevilla and Real Sociedad, to drop six points off the pace being set by their local rivals.

Sevilla were also going strongly under their new coach Jorge Sampaoli until they were held to an away draw by Sporting Gijon and then lost at home to Barcelona. The Europa League holders aim to bounce back when they visit Deportivo La Coruna.

Villarreal are up to third position after only one La Liga defeat all season and the Yellow Submarine will try to continue the good work when they travel to face Athletic Bilbao.

Other interesting match-ups in the 12th round of fixtures are Real Sociedad making the journey to struggling Sporting Gijon, while goals can be expected as Eibar host a Celta Vigo side who score plenty but also concede more than their fair share.

The two El Clasico matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid, which always have a major bearing on the title race, have been scheduled for Sunday December 4 (Camp Nou) and Sunday April 23 (Bernabeu Stadium).
