Borussia Dortmund continue their pursuit of the Bundesliga leaders when they entertain struggling Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon.
The reigning German champions have recovered from a poor run of form that saw them fall off the pace in September and October, but they remain 11 points behind table-toppers Bayern Munich after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw last weekend. Dortmund needed a goal from Mario Gotze to rescue a point at the Allianz Arena – but they really need all three here.
While they have faltered domestically, Dortmund have been excellent in Europa and that has many puzzled. The midweek win over Manchester City ensured they finished top of the “Group of Death”, and the fact they managed to go unbeaten in a group that also contained Real Madrid and Ajax shows this is a quality outfit.
However, that quality was absent as they went on a poor run of form that saw them win just three games during an eight-game spell between September and October. November saw a turnaround in fortunes as they reeled off three consecutive victories, but before they could really build up a head of steam they lost that winning touch.
Dortmund have now drawn their last two outings – against Fortuna Dusseldorf and Bayern Munich – and they will be desperate to get back to winning ways this weekend. The visit of fourth-from-bottom Wolfsburg could be ideal timing for them, and Jurgen Klopp’s men are 1/4 favourites to get the victory they so desperately need. Wolfsburg are 11/1 to deny them by taking all three points, while the draw is 9/2.
